Ambleside Rugby Club Rally - 13th to 20th July 2023
Firstly, I would like to explain that I’m a newbie to rallies, with my better half, and two pooches we set sail to the Ambleside Rally.
First impressions of the site : easy access to the rally field, bus stop outside and a stones throw away from the centre of the town, happy days.
Rally members were welcomed to the first meeting hosted by Robert and Bridget. After introducing ourselves, we played a game called scissors. The game was to determine if the person on your left was opened or closed by using the scissors. The game was well underway when is suddenly occurred to me that I was the only person who had consistently got it wrong. How could this be I asked myself, there had to be some sort of formula. With a smirk on my face, I cunningly analysed everyone’s moves, and bingo, formula completed. It had to be the third person who was closed. I waited patiently for my turn and with confidence I shouted out my answer. Oops wrong again. My ingenious formula had serious flaws, I just could not fathom out how the others were getting it right and and I was getting it so wrong. After much fun and laughter was told, there is no formula, and told how the game worked, boy did I laugh it was so so funny. Obviously, I’m not going to tell, to find out you need to play the game on your next SMOC rally.
The quiz night was a right hoot. When I looked at the questions my mind simply went blank, to be fair I was clueless, should have done some research first but Fred was bang on, he smashed the answers and took top prize. Mental note taken for future reference.
The weather had been brilliant, and we took the offer to join the group on a day out. The trip included a 90 minute boat trip that went from Ambleside to Lakeside, then a 20 minute steam train ride to Haverthwaite. With a torrential downpour on the planned day, Robert and Bridget rearranged, and it was an amazing day out. When we arrived at Haverthwaite train station, Robert suggested that we try the food at the cafe. We couldn’t resist the freshly prepared food and can highly recommend.

Whilst at the station, a little girl dropped her ice-cream. Tony, from our group, immediately spoke to the staff to inform what had happened and the little girl was given another. Just one of many wonderful acts of kindness that members of the Rally group had done during the week long Rally.
We found that there were so many things to see and do in and around Ambleside, in fact we were spoilt for choice to visit Grasmere, Keswick and Windermere all bustling towns with shops restaurants and café. Within easy walking distance we enjoyed a few amber nectars at the local in Waterside village, and the pooches loved the cheeky paddles in the lake.
Val and Dave invited the group to join them in celebrating their 51st wedding anniversary. Nibbles, wine and beer flowed freely, another wonderful evening. A big congratulations to both.
