CAMPER UK FIREWORKS RALLY - Nov 2018
I arrived at the Rally Site at 11.00a.m. On Thursday. The site wasn’t due to open till 12.00 so this would give me time to cordon off a SMOC area with my roll of red and white tape.
I’d just put in the first peg, cordoning off one pitch, when a gatecrasher parked alongside. I quickly and ever so politely pointed out to him that I was reserving pitches for SMOC and that he wasn’t supposed to arrive till after 12 when all the pitches would be marked out. I don’t know whether it was my polite approach, or my coarse Yorkshire accent coupled with the large mallet that I was holding, but the man obliged.
I then waited for the ralliers to arrive. One by one they turned up and settled in. The main event didn’t start till the following day, but Camper UK had brought a display of dozens of new and second hand motorhomes, so the afternoon was spent looking around these.
The following morning a fleet of shuttle buses arrived to ferry people to Lincoln, either to the town or the dealership. We visited Lincoln for a few hours then returned back to site for the evening entertainment . Others spent longer in Lincoln, visiting the castle and the amazing Cathedral. The building is still very impressive in these modern times; you can only imagine how the peasants in their straw huts felt about it 700 years ago when it was the tallest building in the world, a title it held for 238 years.
Back at camp the entertainment tent opened at 6pm for Bingo. Many ralliers combined Bingo with Fish and Chips from the Mobile Chippy washed down with drinks at £2 a pint. Entertainment was provided by Billy Flywheel, with his unique mix of comedy, magic and mind reading.

On Saturday we were up bright and early for a trip to the Camper UK dealership in Lincoln. On entering the showroom there was a trade stand promoting Camperlife Multi Scented Toilet Fluids. It was manned by the owners of the company, Marie and Leon Dolan, who I’d previously only spoken to over the phone regarding Newsletter Advertising.
They are two lovely people who sell anexcellent product, which is more economical and smells nicer than the usual brands.Camper UK were discounting everything in the Accessory Shop making it even cheaper so we stocked up.
Saturday evening brought the main event of the weekend, starting with the free hog roast bap which was enjoyed by all except Sheila who doesn’t eat meat, (leaving Trev to eat two).
This was followed by the Firework Display and the raffle. First prize was an electric bike donated by ‘Powered Cycles’. Then a male duo ‘The Jilted Johns’ performed. During their act, the electric tripped and we were plunged into darkness. It took several attempts to restore power but eventually they were able to finish their spot. Then the disco took over (and got louder and louder).
We could hear it back in the vans till about four in the morning. I think the Camper UK staff were letting their hair down at the end of a very busy week. They had all worked extremely hard to make the event a success.
