Portsdown Hill Portsmouth PO6 3LSTel: 01263 512242 30th July - 6th Aug 2021 Fort Widley is one of the forts built on top of Portsdown Hill between 1860 and 1868 on the recommendation of the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom. It was designed, along with the other Palmerston Forts on top of Portsdown, to protect Portsmouth from attack from the rear. The campsite is on the Parade ground, an elevated position within the heart of the fort, giving stunning views of Portsmouth and the Solent to the front and Waterlooville, Southwick, Denmead and beyond to the rear. There are bus stops close to the Fort which service Portsmouth with its vast array of attractions, such as the Mary Rose, the Historical Dockyard, Gunwharf Keys retail centre and the Spinnaker Tower to name just a few.
