Holland Rally 20th April – 4th May 2019
As newbies two of us were uncertain as to what the procedures would be, but were very quickly welcomed and made at home by Marilyn and David (organiser and marshal). 4 o’clock and everyone gathered at Marilyn’s motorhome for the Welcome Meeting with Dutch buns and coffee, each with our names tags which allowed us all to very quickly get to know each other.
Sunday saw another lovely day and a morning walk to the nearby town of Rijnsburg with a very useful commentary of the area by Marilyn and David followed by a lunch buffet in the site restaurant where the owner gave us a welcome and little history of the site. Food was of an exceptional quality, again a very relaxed event and get to know each other.
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday were free to explore, using bus, bike or on foot.
Wednesday saw a coach trip to see the amazing gardens at Keukenhof, a chance to stock up on the horticultural necessities for home!
Friday, we had a trip to Den Haag for a few hours, then on to Delft for the rest of the day, both cities giving us a very good insight into Holland.
Saturday was the King’s Birthday and the heavens opened and the winds blew. Some of us, all dressed in orange, ventured by taxis to the coastal town of Katwijk to see the celebrations and entertainments. The evening had us gathering in the restaurant for a meal arranged by the owner to join in their celebrations. Tuesday we visited Leiden and had a really pleasant boat trip around the town’s canals and out into the lakes. The captain gave a very informative commentary and provided refreshments and cakes, this was followed again by a chance to explore the area.
Then all of a sudden we had reached Friday and our Farewell dinner; again food of an exceptional quality and company to match.
Saturday saw the party disperse, some of us lucky enough to be carrying on and exploring more of the delights of Holland, others having to return home.During the two weeks, evenings were interspaced with get togethers arranged by Marilyn and David including wine and cheese nights, a fun quiz night, Giant jenga and others. As first time ralliers we have had so much fun and lots of laughs, and have met and made friends with a great group of people and look forward to our next adventures with the club.
