The Lawns, Spalding - July 2016
The Lawns is a relaxing family run site that is owned and managed by Nigel and Tracey. They make everyone really welcome and try harder than any othersite I know to ensure visitors have an enjoyable stay. The rally began on Friday evening with a pork roast dinner in the hut. The popularity of the site meant that three other rallygroups were on site and we all got togetherfor the meal, followed by music that lasted well into the night.Every afternoon the hut served cream teas and all manner of homemade cakes. You really could pile on the pounds if you stayed here for more than a few days and most of us did just that! A few hundred yards away on either side of the A17 are two large cafes cum farm shops cum bric a brac shops where you could easily spend an afternoonbrowsing. The local area is very flat and there are plenty of local walks and cycle rides that can be started from the site. For most of our visit the temperature was red hot, so chilling out and soaking up the sun was a priority, in between visits for another cream tea or piece ofcake! For the more energetic, the nearby Bus Stop gave easy access to Spalding, Kings Lynn and the seaside resort of Hunstanton. |
Another good place to visit was the Frampton Marsh RSPB site which is on The Wash. All manner of rare water birds are found here including Avocet, Lapwing, Godwit, Bittern, Egret, Redshank and Spoonbill. To get here required either a car or to bring the motorhome but was well worth a visit.
As a special treat towards the end of the rally, Marilyn hired an electric boat for a 4 hour trip along the River Welland. Unfortunately, the riverside pub was too far away and we had to reurn to Spalding before we reached it.
On the last night most of us decided to visit the nearby Chinese Restaurant and booked a meal for 7.30p.m. Once again, it had been another very hot, sunny day. Then, at about 7 o’clock, almost without warning the sky darkened and the wind got up. Within a couple of minutes we were in the middle of a horrendous storm. Winds were so strong that I thought the porch awning would be ripped. Thunder, lightning and torrential rain quickly turned to hail stones that hammered down onto the motorhomes. Then, as quickly as it had started it was gone. Thankfully no damage was done and we were able to keep our dinner date.
